The CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) is a pre-service Teacher Development course that focuses on both the theoretical and practical aspects of teaching English. It is an internationally recognized Cambridge Assessment qualification with no expiry. Candidates who successfully complete the course portfolio are awarded a certificate at the levels of Pass, Pass B or Pass A.

    CELT-P & CELT-S Courses

    An online teaching qualification with observed teaching practice

    CELT-P is ideal if you are an English language teacher working in primary education, with learners aged 6–12 years. You refresh and build your knowledge and skills, through a combination of online study and observed teaching practice.

    CELT-S is ideal if you are an English language teacher working in secondary education, with learners aged 11–18 years. You refresh and build your knowledge and skills, through a combination of online study and observed teaching practice.

    The courses help you with challenges like developing learners’ listening and speaking abilities in large classes;

    CELT-P

    Primary school teachers can develop their classroom skills and teaching confidence with CELT-P. It’s a practical English teaching qualification that gives teachers the relevant skills to get the best from 6–12 year-old learners.

    The course helps teachers to create strategies for the key challenges of teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL), such as developing learners’ listening and speaking abilities in large classes.

    CELT-S

    Secondary school teachers can develop their classroom skills and teaching confidence with CELT-S. It’s a practical English teaching qualification that gives teachers the relevant skills to get the best from 11–18 year old learners.

    The course helps teachers to create strategies for the key challenges of teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) in a secondary school context, such as classroom management with large classes and motivating learners.

    What IS CELTA?

    CELTA is intended for;

    • Teachers with no previous teaching experience – the course provides you with the fundamental tools and techniques for teaching English as a foreign language.

    • Teachers with limited teaching experience. The course helps to refine some of the teaching skills they already have as well as introducing them to new ideas and techniques to improve their teaching performance

    CELTA can be done;

    • Full-time face-to-face courses (4 or 5 weeks)

    • Part-time courses (10 – 14 weeks)

    • Fully online courses (5 weeks) – This is currently a temporary option for the duration of the COVID-19 crisis

    CELTA consists of 120 contact hours that involves:

    • Input sessions (40 hours face-to-face with online support)
    • 6 hours of Teaching Practice (observed by experienced tutors with volunteer students)
    • Supervised lesson planning
    • Feedback on teaching practice
    • Peer observation of teaching practice
    • Tutorials (one-to-one consultation with your tutor at least twice during the course)
    • Four written assignments designed to support and reflect what you do in the classroom
    • 6 experienced teacher observations (built into the course)
    • Cambridge also recommends a further 120 hours of self-study time (background reading,
    • assignment writing, and lesson preparation etc.)
